RLSBC takes part in the Coventry Biennial 2021

Sunday 19th September 2021

A film called Phoenix City 2021 by local artist and film-maker Duncan Whitley features a contribution by the choir on its soundtrack.

Back in July 2021, members of the choir got together under Lee Dunleavy’s direction to record the Introitus and Lacrimosa from Mozart’s Requiem. We were asked to make the recording as part of the soundtrack for a film called Phoenix City 2021 by local film-maker Duncan Whitley. This film explores the relationship between the city of Coventry and the mythical phoenix, the bird that is believed to rise from the ashes to live again.

The film forms part of the HYPER-POSSIBLE installation at the Herbert Art Gallery in the centre of Coventry, which is on show from October 8th through to February 2022, and also at the Library in Royal Leamington Spa. More information about the installation can be found on the Coventry Biennial 2021 website (Click Here).

Some of you might have seen the programme when it aired, or on repeat, but if not, those of you who have Sky Arts might want to catch up on an Inside Arts special on Coventry UK City of Culture. Click Here.

There’s a short interview with Duncan Whitley, the producer, about Phoenix City 2021, he mentions the Royal Leamington Spa Bach Choir, and we are featured in a small snippet of the Mozart Requiem from the opening scene.

The choir is delighted to have been able to make a small contribution to the Coventry Biennial 2021, and we are very grateful to Duncan Whitley for inviting us to take part.
