SingWith Us

Royal Leamington Spa Bach Choir has a reputation for musical excellence and is recognised as one of Warwickshire's finest amateur choirs.

Directed by conductor Lee Dunleavy, new to the Bach Choir in 2020, we aim to perform regularly throughout the year at local venues. We have a core programme of about four concerts each year, as well as various private engagements and usually a bit of festive singing for Christmas, which all helps to raise money for the Choir and other good causes, such as those selected by our President, the Mayor.

We enjoy singing a challenging and diverse repertoire and the Choir aims to give performances of a high musical standard, but we also believe that music-making should be fun and a good way to make new friends.

When and where are rehearsals?

During the Warwickshire school term-time, rehearsals are held every Wednesday from 7.30 to 9.45pm in the church of All Saints, Vicarage Field, Emscote, Warwick, CV34 5NJ. There is some car parking available around the church, but if that is full, the only alternative is the car park belonging to the big Tesco's store, a few minutes' walk away across the A445.

Normally there is a short break in the middle of the rehearsal, when tea, coffee and cake are offered for sale, and we also have a raffle to support choir funds. Members are expected to attend a minimum number of rehearsals, to ensure that we maintain a high standard of performance. In addition to weekly practices, we also arrange occasional Saturday workshops.

Can I try it out?

If you have basic music skills already, you are welcome to come along and sing with us on a trial basis for a few weeks to see if you wish to join the choir full-time. We will lend you the necessary sheet music, subject to a small charge for music hire. We think you will find us friendly and welcoming. Please feel free just to turn up on a Wednesday evening, or if you prefer, email us beforehand via the Contact Us page.

Can I join in the middle of a term?

You are welcome to come along and try us out at any time, but please be aware that there is an attendance requirement for singing in concerts. That means that if you start more than two weeks into the rehearsals for a particular performance, you may need to wait until the following term before you will be allowed to sing in a concert - subject of course to successfully completing an audition. This will be the Director of Music's decision.

Do I have to pass an audition?

In order to join the choir and sing in our concerts, it is necessary to take an audition. This will usually take place after two or three weeks, and will involve some voice exercises, simple sight reading, and a short demonstration of your singing and ability to keep in tune.

The audition will be performed privately with the Director of Music and usually takes place before a normal practice night. Singers are re-auditioned every three years to ensure that the choir maintain its high standards. If this sounds serious, please don't be alarmed - as well as striving for choral perfection, we also like to enjoy ourselves along the way!

What does it cost to join?

The Royal Leamington Spa Bach Choir is a registered charity, and all members are asked to make a contribution towards the costs of the Choir's activities via an annual subscription. Full membership of the choir costs £150 per year, payable in September - this can be online, by cheque, or in cash. After a successful audition, new members may pay pro-rata for the remaining part of the year.

As a new member you will pay nothing until you have passed your audition and decided to join the choir. Music scores for each concert can either be bought through the Choir, or ordered as hire copies for a small charge through the Choir Librarian.
